Wildly Easy And Wonderful Ways To Up-Cycle Scrap Metal And Aluminum Cans

Posted on

If your household consumes canned soft drinks and beverages, you may find that you have a stock-pile of discarded aluminum cans on hand. Rather than tote these to the local recycling center, or tossing them in the trash, which will subsequently end up in a land-fill, try some alternative ways to use these items. There are numerous fun and simple crafting projects which will not only recycle your aluminum cans, but that will result in some one-of-a-kind creations.

Some wildly easy ways to up-cycle your old cans include:

Fresh herb containers.

These vessels are ideal for bringing a bit of the outdoors in, and creating some customized herb containers for your kitchen counter. Remove the top of the can with a regular can opener, and spray paint the entire can in the color of your choice; use a paint pen or permanent marker to write the name of the herb in a contrasting color on the side, and fill with fresh-picked herbs or seedlings. You may also personalize these containers to be used as a gift vase for a special gift to share with someone else.

Metal jewelry items.

Aluminum cans can be cut to create unique, recycled jewelry items. Use wire snips to cut out small circles and shapes, and pierce the top with a hole for links, jump-rings, or pendant chains. Use a fine-grit sandpaper to smooth any sharp edges and try giving the metal a textured appearance by gently tapping at the facade with a jewelry hammer.

Creative chimes.

Using the same approach that you would for jewelry, cut shapes and designs out of the metal can and pierce a hole to be strung with clear fishing line or thread. Suspend these together at varying lengths to create a classic and yet unique wind chime for the porch or patio.

Picnic pal.

Remove the tops from the cans, and use industrial strength glue or epoxy to secure six cans together, much like they would appear in a typical six-pack of soda or beer. Pierce a hole in one of the cans on opposite ends to string a pipe cleaner through for a handle. Use these on a picnic table to contain cutlery, napkins, and condiments for your backyard barbecue!

Don't throw another metal can away; instead, try one of these simple strategies to transform the item into something great. With metal snips, plastic fishing line, a little paint, and a can opener, you can easily turn an old soda or beer can into a handcrafted item that is suitable for giving to someone special.
